Suppose (a, b) is at a distance of 5 units from (3,−5). What equation do a and b satisfy?

Answer

The equation is obtained by p(3 − a)2 + (−5 − b)2 = 5

i.e. (3 − a)2 + (5 + b)2 = 25

9 + a2 − 6a + 25 + b2 + 10b = 25.

a2 + b2 − 6a + 10b + 9 = 0.
