The atmosphere is a region of gases surrounding the earth. It is divided into three layers. The layer of air next to the earth is called the troposphere. It extends upwards for about 10 miles.

The next layer is called the stratosphere and it extends to a height for about 50 miles. The presence of ozone gases in the lower portions of the stratosphere prevents the destruction of life.

Above the stratosphere is the ionosphere.
