Income tax inspectors surveyed 50 houses in Greater Kailash in New Delhi and found that 16 house owners had Maruti Zen, 8 had Toyota Corolla, 29 had Maruti Esteem, 11 had Ford Ikon, 9 had both Maruti Esteem and Zen and 5 had both Ford Ikon and Maruti esteem. Draw a Venn diagram showing this data. If one house owner is picked at random, what is the probability that (a) the house owner owns a Maruti Zen only? (b) the house owner owns a Ford Ikon only?

Events are F : Female, Pr : Professor, M : Male, L : Lecturer, then

P(F) = 34/67 , P(Pr) = 21/67, P(M) =33 /67 , P(L) = 27/67,P(F and Pr) = 12/67, P(M and L) = 13/67

  1. P(F or Pr) = P(F) + P(Pr) − P(F and Pr) = 34/67 + 21/67 − 12/67 = 43/67
  2. P(M or L) = 33/67 + 27/67 − 13/67 = 47/67
