  • Political arguments, in this tradition, have generally been of a normative nature due to the fact that the subjects of concern and reflection have been matters such as:
  • what is justice?
  • Are there human rights and if so, what are they?
  • What is the role of the state? 
  • Do individuals have definable needs and if so, who has an obligation to satisfy them?
  • Should the government seek the greatest happiness of the greatest number and, if it should, what is the place of the minorities within this rubric?
  • What gives government legitimacy and a state sovereignty?
  • What sorts of claims on resources does the recognition of merit or desert embody?
  • How far is the majority justified in imposing its moral outlook on the rest of society?
  • Can we give an adequate account of the social and political institutions?
  • What is the best form of government?
