Swadeshi movement was a mass movement to encourage people to develop a habit of consuming Indian products rather than foreign products. He justified swadeshi on moral principles. The first relevant principle was that of neighbourhood. The duty of an individual is to his neighbours. This leads to swadeshi which refers to the consumption of local products. His contention was that it would be sinful to wear foreign clothes while neighbouring weavers starve due to lack of demand for their products. Spinning and wearing khaddar (khadi) became symbolic expressions of swadeshi.
