Since there are no clear favourites, any of the athletes can win any medal. The Gold medal can go to any of the 5 athletes. The Silver medal can go to any of the 4 remaining athletes. The Bronze medal can go to any of the three remaining athletes. So, the medals can be awarded in 5 × 4 × 3 = 60 ways by the Multiplication principle.
