Both ASEAK and SAARC are associations of Asian developing countries. While their objectives are today the same as that of the EU i.e., to accelerate economic growth and promote regional peace, they still have a long way to go.

While ASEAN was formed in 1967, SAARC is a latecomer. More so, because of the lack of economic complementarity, unequal levels of development, economic nationalism, over-regulated trade policies SAARC is riddled with problems mostly bilateral which has slowed the process of economic integration.
